Sunday, November, 24th, 2024, starting from 4pm.

xart splitta, Hasenheide 73, 10967 Berlin

Depending on requirements, this event takes place in German or English spoken language and in German sign language.

Within the framework of this year’s theme ‘Identities’, we cordially invite you to our Community Talk on Colourism and Black Identities.

This space is an invitation to Black people who benefit from Colorism/Shadism/Featurism to critically question their own privileges within a marginalised identity in a Braver Space. We want to create a space where we can work together to raise awareness around exclusions that have profound consequences on structures and identities within our Black communities. We want to invite you into a courageous space for alliances, allyship and solidarities.

How can we actively position ourselves against a system that gives us undeserved advantages while excluding, devaluing or disadvantaging other Black people? How can mixed-raced, light-skinned and/or brown-skinned Black people establish and strengthen (their own) identity in relation to allyship and ‘political Blackness’?
We assume that you have as much and more knowledge as we do and do not see ourselves as experts. Our offer is to create and hold the space for (knowledge) exchange.

Together we want to take the opportunity to discuss often unreflected hierarchies and exclusions within Black communities. To rethink ways and actions and critically reflect on internalised, anti-Black racism in order to disrupt divide and conquer.

This space is meant to check in with each other, learn from each other and become (more) active together, but also to hold ourselves and each other accountable.

The space will be held by Jul and Taye. Jul is light-skinned, bi-racial, born in Germany and raised by a white and Bosnian-Muslim family. Taye was born and raised to two Tigrayan Orthodox parents in Germany, positioning themselves as neither light-skinned nor dark-skinned, but as featurism – privileged. Both of them are dragging a couple more intersections along.

We assume that you have as much and more knowledge as we do and do not see ourselves as experts. Our offer is to create and hold the space for (knowledge) exchange.
