„Identity is embodied and rooted, not performed.“
– Leanne Betasamosake Simson
What does identity mean when it’s no longer defined solely by a past or external labels but by conscious and dynamic self-determination and a future together?
As we have been exploring, discussing and reflecting about Identities this year, we had the chance to create beautiful and informing spaces to reflect on discourses, positions and alliances.
We examined the ways identities are being ascribed, reclaimed, negotiated as well as which are highlighted whilst others were pushed to the sides. Viewing identities as dynamic and fluid constructs means recognising that they are not static or permanently fixed but constantly evolving in response to new experiences, relationships, and self-discoveries. Instead of being limited by labels or categories ascribed by society, identities have the potential of becoming an ongoing, self-determined process — a journey of questioning, adapting, and redefining.
Having these dynamics in mind, we would like to take the last panel of the year as a moment of envisioning. What happens when we can start dreaming of identities detached from structural oppression? We would like to try this motion towards envisioning what we can or could embody.
When identity is no longer defined solely by a past or external meaning but by conscious and dynamic self-determination, what does it mean? Can we also diverge from identities, therefore?
What are the consequences of understanding identity as something that can grow, change, and be reimagined? If identities name who we are, represent where we come from and built what we want to become?
We warmly invite you to the panel discussion “Re/Envisioning Identities” on Thursday, 28th November 2024 at 6:30pm, at xart splitta, Hasenheide 73, 10967 Berlin.
Moderated by May Zeidani Yufanyi , we aim to reflect on how identities can be renegotiated today and explore their potential for a reenvisioned futures beyond what is now.
